Brand association: the Wonga move

Yesterday Newcastle United announced that controversial pay-day loans company, Wonga would adorn the front of the player’s shirts. MPs have condemned the move, suggesting the club, and the North East, can ill afford association with such a business.

Forget the club for a moment; would you buy a shirt with Wonga on it?

They made a good PR move giving them the St James Park name back, but it’s not like anyone called it the Sports Direct Arena anyway.

Would i buy a shirt with Wonga on it?  No I wouldn’t, too much negativity associated with the name.

Westray Recruitment have written a great article about the Wonga issue, they state that several other Premier League clubs have betting companies and alcohol brands as their sponsors.
