Revolutionary cancer ablation service launched in Southampton

A leading service for delivering a pioneering treatment that destroys cancerous kidney tumours has launched in Southampton.

Cancer Ablation UK offers referrals for both private and NHS patients to have non surgical treatment in the form of image guided ablation, where tumours are frozen to destroy them using thin hollow needles that pass through the skin and into the tumour tissue.

Dr David Breen has been at the forefront of development for this revolutionary method, and he has joined forces with anaesthetist Dr Neil McGill to offer treatment for patients across the south at Spire Southampton Hospital.

Dr Breen said, “This image guided surgery has a number of advantages over traditional methods of tumour removal or destruction. Cryoablation leaves no incision or scarring, and is less painful, meaning less time spent recovering and in hospital, and these are important considerations for patients.”

It is also cheaper than other techniques, and preserves the normal tissue around the tumour more effectively.

It is estimated that 8,000 British people are diagnosed with kidney cancer each year, and many of those are men in their 50s and 60s.

The procedure is suitable for patients of any age, and though it is primarily used to destroy small tumours on the kidney, ablation is also effective for use on cancers of the liver, lung, bone and soft tissue.

Dr Breen says that cryoablation is part of a growing trend towards less invasive procedures for small cancers. “The results for patients are outstanding, and those we have treated are very happy with the results, and how little disruption there is to their lives in having this treatment carried out.

“We’re delighted to be able to offer this service to a wider audience by operating out of Spire Southampton Hospital. Having access to this kind of treatment locally is a fantastic development for people in the south.”
