York heritage hotel on the market for £2.25m
A hotel of significant Victorian heritage in York is on the market for sale at £2.25m through specialist agents, Colliers International.
The Groves on St Peter’s Grove, just opposite the famous St Peter’s School, is believed to be the only William Pentey designed building remaining in private hands in the city.
Situated within easy walking distance of the Minster and city centre attractions, The Groves is a hugely successful bed and breakfast business with beautifully refurbished facilities.
Attractive public rooms, including guest bar lounge, are complemented by 26 individually appointed letting bedrooms all with modern en suite facilities and there is a large private rear car park.
Peter Bean, hotels director at Colliers International in Leeds, commented: “Buyers have a rare opportunity to acquire one of York’s largest and best B&Bs.
“A full refurbishment was completed in 2012 and the business has responded exceedingly well as one would expect given the marvellous facilities and superb location in this internationally famous tourism city.”
The Groves dates back to 1896 when it was originally built by William Pentey for a Leeds tobacconist who wanted to expand his business in York by using the River Ouse to deliver to customers.
During the first and second world wars the building was used for army barracks before becoming the Savages Hotel in 1958.
The Cottage and York House were added over the years to expand accommodation although charming original features remain in the original building.
