Council lifts curtain on North East theatre revamp with six-figure investment

A theatre in the heart of the North East is set to undergo a series of improvement works after securing a six-figure investment.

Durham County Council has announced it will invest over £500k to improve the Empire Theatre in Consett in County Durham.

As well as essential external repairs, the investment will fund a revamp for the theatre’s auditorium, enhancements to the stage and lighting, as well as the improvement of backstage facilities, the café and box office areas.

Work on the theatre is scheduled to be completed by early September, in time for the venue’s autumn programme of productions.

Cllr Joy Allen, cabinet member for transformation, culture and tourism, commented: “The Empire Theatre is a popular venue and is the heart of Consett for live theatre, the latest blockbusters, cultural events, and as a place to unwind at its café.

“These improvements will give the venue a real boost so it can continue as a hub for family-friendly entertainment when it re-opens in the autumn season.”
