Homelessness scheme shortlisted for award
A flagship Gateshead housing development designed to support vulnerable residents has been shortlisted for a property award ahead of welcoming its first tenants.
Prospect Place in Pelaw has been named as a finalist in the residential development category at the RICS UK Awards 2026 for the North East.
Delivered through a partnership between Tyne Housing and Gateshead Council, the scheme includes 20 new homes comprising 17 supported apartments and three progression flats designed to help residents move towards independent living.
Judges recognised the project for combining high-quality housing with wider social impact, with the development incorporating psychologically informed design principles, sustainability features and dedicated spaces for support, learning and wellbeing services.
Built on a previously disused and technically challenging site, the development required significant engineering work due to its location on a former quarry and issues including slope stability and a failing retaining wall.
Project leaders say the scheme reflects more than 50 years of Tyne Housing’s experience supporting vulnerable adults and aims to provide aspirational living standards for people experiencing homelessness.
Steve McKinlay, chief executive of Tyne Housing, said: “Being shortlisted for the RICS UK Awards is a fantastic achievement and a testament to the hard work and collaboration of everyone involved in Prospect Place.
“The development demonstrates what can be achieved through a shared commitment to delivering high-quality homes that make a real difference to people’s lives.”
The development was supported through funding from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government and Homes England’s Single Homeless Accommodation Programme, which focuses on increasing specialist housing provision.
The winners of the North East RICS UK Awards 2026 will be announced in July.
