Bdaily, the story so far

by Sarah Callender

I thought this would be a good time to provide a bit of an insight in to Bdaily and some of the things we have been experiencing as a business. In April 2012 I was involved in the set up of a company called Ground Six. In a nutshell, we’re a team of entrepreneurial programmers, designers, marketers and businesses minds who have come together to build and create technology driven businesses. We’ve spent the last year developing a range of…

Peering over paywalls

by Tom Keighley

The paywall has become the preoccupation of the media industry. I recently came across some research from global pricing specialists, Simon-Kucher & Partners, that suggested two thirds of media companies they surveyed expected the ‘free content era’ to come to an end. Is this what media companies hope for, or what they need? The paywall debate seems to revolve around newspaper companies as they use the function for a two-fold purpose: to stem the decline of print circulations, and to monetise…

Can art and technology co-exist?

by Miranda Dobson

I used to think technology was fairly irrelevant to my life. It existed on my computer screen and in my phone, and that was about it. I always thought of myself as a staunch traditionalist who opted for ‘real’ books rather than e-books, and who would rather flick through a giant photo album than cast my eye over a digital photo frame. Then I started working for Bdaily. Over the past eight months I have been (almost fully) converted after realising that…

Out of the pan into the fire

by Graham Vincent

Graham Vincent, Bdaily Content Manager What exactly does a Content Manager do? That was the question that shrouded my mind as I pondered my new role at Bdaily over the Easter Bank Holiday. As the revelry of the long weekend morphed into excitedly starting with Bdaily on Tuesday, I thrust straight into acquainting myself with the nuances of content aggregation and also meeting the team. Content aggregation will be my lifeblood over the coming months; from developing contacts and seeking partners for aggregation…

The bigger they are, the faster they bounce

by Simon Tapson

Bdaily have recently experienced a very short period of downtime which coincided perfectly with the bulletin delivery. This you can imagine, caused some dismay in the office. The catalyst of this outage was an automated DDOS (distributed denial-of-service) attack, targeted at another customer using the same third party that we use to deliver our website. This attack caused our provider’s servers to become so busy that they were rendered incapable of directing traffic to Bdaily. The irony in this situation is…

Disrupting the traditional media models

by Tom Keighley

How confident do you feel in being the master of your own news? User generated news, opinion and advice sits alongside editorial at Bdaily. This model has raised some eyebrows, not only from other media quarters, but from businesses themselves. A journalist may argue that users might not possess the news sense or balance, among other skills required, to put together an engaging and relevant news story, or an opinion article. I think it would be wrong to suggest that. While Bdaily…

Bdaily flies the nest

by Miranda Dobson

February flew by here at Bdaily, and the changes have been coming fast and strong. Since we were acquired by our lovely new colleagues Ground Six at the end of last year we’ve been working hard to make Bdaily the best it can be for our readers. We’ve changed our personalised bulletin design (and we’re still welcoming your comments!) and as well as a raft of other improvements to the website. And it’s not just all-change online for Bdaily. As the…
