Let’s spend it – not send it back to Brussels!

So you’re a small business thinking about what, or who, is going to shape and grow your business.  Investing in staff is a fundamental value that should resonate from the heart of your business… so what if you could do it for free?

Woodlands Park Day Nursery & Pre-School recently opened in Apperley Bridge in Bradford, this new children’s day nursery want to provide something their customers wouldn’t get from other providers.

Key on their agenda is to retain a highly skilled and motivated workforce to share in their vision to provide exceptionally high quality childcare in a safe and stimulating environment – they knew they needed to invest in their staff to help achieve this.

They set about asking themselves what they needed to do; what resources they would need to dedicate? How would they ultimately achieve their vision? With that of course comes those key questions of where do we get the money to do this? Can we afford the time commitments? How will this realistically impact our business?

It was during this time that Heather Baker, the Nursery’s Founder, saw an advert for the Response Project – a new project set up in the Leeds City Region with European funding to help provide free support and training to employees of small and medium businesses.

To find out more, Heather attended one of the events the Response Project was hosting with one of the projects delivery partners in Bradford. Far from being a large networking event, Heather found a small business breakfast where she could talk directly to the training provider.  Heather discussed her business needs with Forster Community College, who explained how the ESF funded project worked, went through her eligibility and how she could benefit from support.

“The Response project provided the Nursery with an opportunity to get bespoke skills improvement for staff in a flexible way which both supported the business and the staff to grow.”

After their initial meeting The College arranged sessions to sign up Heather’s staff and began initial training sessions based around the business needs.

“Some of the sessions were held during our two weeks of staff training to allow all staff to attend. Other training sessions are being held in evenings though out the year. The College tutors even changed their working hours to be flexible around our business needs, agreeing to run sessions in the evenings so as not to interfere with our day-to-day business.”

The opportunity for free training and support has benefitted the nursery immensely. The team received a variety of accredited training including Paediatric First Aid, Food Hygiene and Safeguarding along with refreshers in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) throughout the year to maintain the highest level of Childcare they can possibly provide.  The support has given every member of staff the confidence to carry out their role to the very best of their ability and proved the commitment of the nursery to their staff and parents. The Project allowed them to offer training to every member of their team.

“We are so grateful for the support and can honestly say that after leaving the very first seminar I came away thinking someone is watching over us, offering us that something we needed to make our dreams a reality. We are so grateful to all the staff at the Response Project and their services will always come very highly recommended by all of us here at Woodlands Park Day Nursery”

Perhaps you are a sole trader or small business reading this and wondering how you too can grow your business and invest in your staff…

Perhaps you are a small business or sole trader who often finds themselves complaining that there is no support out there and you have to do it all alone…

Well, the Response Project may be able to help you out. Simply put, this money needs to be spent and the Project want to put it to the best use – using it to support your business to grow and succeed.

Don’t let this money go back to Brussels – let’s spend it all!  If you are an SME employing less than 250 people and you want to see what free support and training you can get to help your business, then this is your opportunity to tell the Response Project and take advantage of it!
