Computer decides criminal's fates

A Chinese court has come under fire from the media for relying on a computer programme to give out prison sentences. Ananova.com reports that the specially designed software has been used in over 1,500 criminal cases at the Zichuan District People’s Court. The system works by the judge entering details of a case, and the data is matched against a database of about 100 different crimes, including robbery, rape, murder and crimes against the state. Local media have branded courts who use the software ‘lazy’.
