Deaf student shortlisted for award
Newcastle College student Asia Shameen is one step closer to her dream of going to university after she passed her IT Practitioners course with distinction. Asia is a profoundly deaf student who joined the college 2 years ago after discovering a love for IT. Her hard work has also seen her shortlisted for the forthcoming CoLas (Celebration of Learning and Skills) awards. The awards are for employers, organisations and individuals who have reached the very pinnacle of innovative and progressive learning excellence.Â
Asia has not only made a difference to herself but has also impressed her lecturers, as well as her fellow pupils, by getting them to understand and appreciate hearing impairments, an area that many were unfamiliar with before working and studying with Asia.
Asia said: “I’ve had brilliant support from all of the staff and my friends at Newcastle College. I’ve really enjoyed my time here and its not been difficult at all even though I was the only deaf person in the class. I’m proud to get a distinction and really looking forward to the awards ceremony.”
Angela Williams, Manager of Curriculum and Business Development at Newcastle College, said: “Asia was always a keen student and very enthusiastic about her studies. She had an excellent attitude in class and was constantly striving to improve. Asia should be recognised foe her learning achievements, especially as she has overcome barriers to succeed in further education.”
