Top tipple tips shared by guest sommeliers
Business diners from around the region are being invited to recommend their favourite wines at a Newcastle restaurant.
The Fisherman’s Lodge in Jesmond is asking local wine connoisseurs who regularly dine out on business to become one of their monthly Guest Sommeliers, offering their choices to other guests.
The Guest Sommelier will be chosen each month and will receive a bottle of their recommended wine, as well as being featured in the Fisherman’s Lodge menu. The first Guest Sommelier during the month of November is wine buff Paul Woolston of PricewaterhouseCoopers, who has recommended his favourite Masi Serego Alighieri 2006 white wine.
“I recommended this wine because it is based on one of the most popular grapes grown in Italy, Garganega, supplemented with some Sauvignon Blanc,” said Paul. “The result is a delightful wine which works well as an aperitif and especially with fish. It is a pale yellow and has a taste of almonds, lemons and even a little elderflower. It has a long aftertaste with good acidity.”
The Fisherman’s Lodge has had a chic interior redesign and has appointed a new young chef, Ashley Paynton, who has worked in top London restaurants and joins the Newcastle restaurant from his recent post with the Roux family.
Tom Maxfield of the Fisherman’s Lodge said: “Wine is an important complement to a meal but it is often hard to know exactly what to order, which is where a top sommelier comes in. However, many of our guests are discerning wine connoisseurs so it is great that they can have an opportunity to share their knowledge. It is also an opportunity for them to promote their business, as each guest sommelier will feature in the menu alongside the name of their company.”
