College rewards high achievers

TyneMet College has celebrated the achievements of 45 students in a special awards evening to recognise the accomplishments of its learners.

More than 150 guests attended the event at the Coast Road campus venue, to witness high achievers from TyneMet Sixth Form, Vocational Academy, Pre-employment, Workforce Development and Higher Education programmes achieve recognition for excelling in their chosen course of study in the 2007/2008 academic year.

The prizes were presented by TyneMet College partners who sponsored awards on the evening, including Newcastle University, Fabriam Learning, the University of Sunderland, Lomax, Quantum Specials and Russum. Students received up to £100 as part of their award on the evening, with many of the rewards provided by sponsors.

Learners from the pre-employment and workforce development programmes were also represented on the night with awards for the top achievers on work-based and skills training courses, including English as Second Language (ESOL) student of the year, Ali Haidary. Arriving in the UK at the age of 16 from his native Iran as an asylum seeker, Ali progressed through his ESOL course in order to achieve his goals of becoming a lawyer.

Phil Green, Principal of TyneMet College, said: “The student awards evening is an annual celebration to reward our students for excelling in their chosen course of study. As well as rewarding academic achievements, we look to shine a light on some of the real success stories which we come across as learners overcome many barriers to complete education and training programmes which can open up new and exciting career opportunities.

“Staff and students alike are impressed time and again with the dedication to succeed shown by our learners and I wish all of our students the very best for the future.”
