Waste management company preserves ancient woodland
DURHAM BASED Premier Waste Management has donated £210,000 to Durham Wildlife Trust in a once in a generation opportunity to renovate Milkwellburn Wood in the Derwent Valley.
The donation, which was made through the County Durham Environmental Trust (CDENT), uses landfill tax collected on waste deposited at Premier’s Blaydon landfill site.
Durham Wildlife Trust has said it can now work towards delivering its vision for a Living Landscape, which will enhance the green corridor that runs along the valley and connects urban Tyneside with Derwent reservoir and western Durham.
Steve Scott, chief executive at Premier Waste Management, said: “Our corporate social responsibility is extremely important to the company and we saw Milkwellburn Wood as an unprecedented opportunity to increase the biodiversity in the region.
“It’s not everyday that you have the opportunity to purchase a whole wood and we’re delighted that the Trust can now begin its renovations to preserve such a historic environmental site that future generations will be able to enjoy.”
A site of Nature Conservation Importance since 1991, Milkwellburn Wood is home to rare wildlife species, as well as endangered wildflowers.
Its restoration is said be a long-term project, spanning several decades.
