Cargo Fleet Constructors Shortlisted For National Site Award

A Teesside construction firm has been shortlisted for a prestigious national industry award due to its outstanding site standards during the restoration of the iconic Cargo Fleet Offices.

Local construction firm Conservatek has been shortlisted for the 2012 Considerate Constructors Scheme National Site Awards, which recognises exceptional standards of consideration towards local neighbourhoods and public, the workforce and the environment.

The renowned awards are only given to the highest scoring 7.5 per cent of sites, which have been assessed nationwide and completed within 2011.

The firm, which worked under the direction of regeneration specialists and commercial property developers Python Properties, transformed the derelict building that has stood empty and vandalised for more than eight years into business premises.

Shaun Cooper, Conservatek director, said: “We are delighted to be shortlisted for a Considerate Constructors award; it is fantastic to be acknowledged for our commitment and exceptional standards of work.

“By even being shortlisted by such a prestigious industry body highlights that we are among the top 7.5 per cent of constructors rated for site standards in the country.”

The three-storey Edwardian building was originally built by Cargo Fleet Iron Company in 1916 and was formerly the headquarters of British Steel Teesside and then subsequently Redcar and Cleveland Council.

The constructors worked incredibly hard to preserve original features of the historic building and created a state-of-the-art Heritage Gallery and on-site bistro. Cargo Fleet Offices also has 200 secure car parking spaces, a manned reception and conference facilities.

Python Properties and Conservatek have worked on a number of regeneration projects together, including the redevelopment of the award-winning Co-Operative Building in Middlesbrough, which has also been nominated for the LABC (Local Authority Building Control) Building Excellence Awards.

Conservatek, which has been shortlisted from 8,500 eligible sites, will find out if they have won a bronze, silver or gold award at a special award event in March to be held at The Lowry Hotel in Manchester.
