3 things a CEO must do well

By Malcolm Gallagher, CEO The Executive Boardroom

The U.S. Army says there are 32 traits of a good leader. 32! By the time you have got to the last you’ll likely have forgotten the first 10!

So what makes a good CEO or Managing Director? There’s more than just the leadership traits needed with governance, strategy, sales, communications and much more to balance.

But, in a nutshell, here at The Executive Boardroom, we reckon there are 3 things a CEO has to do well. Focus on these 3 and you are well on your way to true effectiveness.

The three that you need to you need to do as a CEO or MD are:
1. Set direction and milestones with a clear focus and no distraction. The ability to firmly say, “No, we are not doing that,” is very important.

2. Assign resources which means both financial and human and includes your own time!

3. Hire and fire the top team including fellow directors – and do it swiftly and intelligently

Okay, I admit it is not as simple as just these 3 things but hopefully you agree they are a firm foundation for effectiveness. Got any others to add?
