Potts Print on why SMEs should go green

Following on from The Big Eco Show at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light last week, we posed a series of questions to the panelists from the Bdaily “Seriously Speaking“ debate. Tony Mullarky from Potts Print, a Carbon Balanced Publication Printing firm, told Bdaily about why SMEs need to take environmental action.

What motivates the average small business to take action on this agenda?

There are a number of reasons to allow any business to adopt the climate change agenda. In the first instance it will allow you to look into the business with a view of improving a process, saving costs and training your workforce gaining superior techniques and skills to sell to your customer base. Secondly it allows you to create resilience and faith in your business to protect it no matter what occurrence whether it is Thunder Thursday or any detrimental circumstance that can come along. Finally it is 100% right to consider our own impact on climate change to make the difference for our futures.

Competitors in other countries are less concerned with the green economy, why should I be?

We can make a statement to other business communities and create our own niche for gaining work both at home and abroad. We can be the market leaders and the businesses planning for legislation that will hit everyone in time. Take the opportunity now and grow your own business in a sustainable, ecologically sound basis before other do!

How urgently do businesses need to address climate change?

The impacts of climate change have been visible this year in particular locally so to act now by evaluating you are ‘climate proof’ gaining marketable advantages can only an asset to every business. I would suggest that all businesses look into the advantages of change within their own businesses, create resilience and processes they can sell which inevitably creates a product or supplier that can stand the test of time and grow due to be ahead of the game.
