The Great British Workforce Revolution - conference

The UK is witnessing a workplace revolution. Nearly half of the UK’s working population is not in conventional full-time employment, and many people are now working as freelancers, contractors, self-employed or as interim managers.

The Office for National Statistics states there are 29.7 million in work in the UK, but 46.5% are not full-time employees. It is estimated 4.2 million are self-employed, 8 million work part-time and just under 1.6 million are temporary workers. Somewhere in these figures is the increasing number of senior executives working part-time in SMEs and venture backed companies – mostly as investor Directors.

Russam GMS, one of the UK’s leading interim management providers is partnering with Angel News, the online information and live events business focused on the entrepreneurial investment community to host a unique conference, ‘The Great British Workforce Revolution …Going it alone as an Independent,’ that will explore the reasons behind this fast growing trend at Dexter House, Tower Hill, London on 16th October 2013.

The one day conference will seek to understand why nearly half the UK working population are not conventional full-time employees, the implications for UK businesses, who the people are leading this revolution – the entrepreneurs, self-employed, freelancers, interim managers and contract workers and why nearly half the UK workforce isn’t on anyone’s payroll.

The event will bring together well known key speakers, economists and influencers in the senior executive market to uncover everything people need to know about working as an independent executive.

As well as keynote speakers (to be announced) there will be four debates:

Where is the work? Winning the work? Developing your work? Optimising the rewards for your work

Russam says there are two main issues central to this workplace revolution:

Is Government aware of the situation? Government can be seen as partly responsible for encouraging more part-time working or self-employment due to certain austerity measures, but HMRC does little to decrease the red tape for those working in the ‘grey area’ between PAYE and working as a contractor/self-employed or freelancer, plus employment legislation gets ever more complex What is the real picture of the 46.5% people not working as full time employees? Are people choosing to work part-time or on freelance / interim basis or are economic conditions encouraging this? How do people find work and how can they successfully market their own ‘brand’? What are the legal implications and best tax scenarios for people working outside of PAYE?

Charles Russam, Chairman of Russam GMS commented: “The workplace has been undergoing a transformation over the last couple of decades. The way people are working has changed, with half of UK workers working as independents. We want a better understanding of the size and nature of the off-payroll and flexible workforce, as very little is currently understood about this growing band of people.

“We are excited to partner with Angel News to explore the themes and issues surrounding one of the most exciting workplace revolutions since the industrial revolution. This way of working has a unique set of unique requirements for success and we want to help people and businesses understand the implications of working this way.”

Modwenna Rees-Mogg, CEO and Founder of Angel News said: “The event is a must-attend event for anyone currently working in this space or thinking about doing so and we hope to learn a great deal more about the freelance, contract and interim sector by the end of the day.”

Tickets are priced at £60 per delegate if booked early and can be purchased online at www.eventbrite.co.uk/event/7273221401. For more information go to: http://workplacerevolution.jacobo.co.uk/
