Other side of World for Westmoor Watertight Doors
North East engineering firm, Westmoor Engineering, has successfully designed, manufactured, tested and delivered watertight doors to the Royal Australian Navy (RAN).
The £30,000 deal came about as part of a RAN programme to refurbish its navy service vessel, HMAS Success (II), and Westmoor Engineering were the chosen company to deliver the required watertight doors.
As part of the contract, the doors were required to be tested to 15 PSI, witnessed by third party inspectors Bureau Veritas. Westmoor undertook the testing in-house, manufacturing a bespoke test tank in order to conduct hydrostatic pressure testing.
Engineering Manager, Jack McCusker, commented that the contract went back to heart of Westmoor’s origins: “Westmoor was traditionally a door and hatch manufacturer for ships and vessels in the Sunderland area during the 19th and 20th century, where this sort of contract would have been commonplace, and delivered to more local customers!”
And despite Westmoor moving into other industries, such as civil engineering, Mr McCusker says these contracts are still required as older vessels go through regular reconditioning: “Navy’s are of course keen to maintain their vessels for as long as possible to avoid time and money being spent on new vessels and fleets. Therefore demand is still big for these kinds of products, and luckily Westmoor developed its reputation long ago.”
Westmoor Engineering is now based in Cramlington, and is part of engineering service and product providers, Renown Group.
