New MBA responds to the need for emotionally intelligent leaders

A brand new MBA programme at Sheffield Hallam University has been designed using the latest leadership techniques to create managers fit for 21st century business success.

The new Executive MBA programme reflects the complexity and changing nature of modern business and the need for leaders to develop ‘emotional capital’ (EQ), a key competency for successful leadership.

The new MBA programme at Sheffield Hallam gives students the chance to fully develop their own EQ skills, in order for them to be more resilient, creative and innovative leaders. Emotional capital skills can also be used to solve people problems and improve staff retention and drive.

The University’s flexible programme can be tailored around a student’s needs depending on the sector in which they work, in order to develop confident and agile leaders with skills relevant to their careers.

EQ expert and psychiatrist Dr Martyn Newman has worked with some of the world’s biggest companies to transform their business models by inspiring their leaders to develop emotional capital skills. He has played a key role in integrating EQ into the University’s new MBA programme curriculum.

He said: “Leadership is about helping people to imagine the future and understand why the future can be better than the present. Leaders should be able to describe a vision of what that future looks like and inspire employees to create it… To attract the most talented people, organisations must focus on building exceptional workplace cultures where passionate people can innovate and drive change. This is the fundamental challenge that leaders face. It’s the challenge of building emotional capital.”

The University offers specialist routes in various sectors including education, built environment and psychology, and offer graduates Chartered Management Institute (CMI) membership and chartered manager status (subject to approval).

The Executive MBA (Built Environment) is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Housing, the Chartered Institute of Building and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (subject to approval). The Executive MBA (Psychology) is approved by the British Psychological Society Learning Centre for the purposes of continuing professional development.

Students develop skills through practical experience using real-world case studies and work-based learning, enabling assignments and projects to focus on the organisational needs and individual areas of interest.
