Industry day showcases careers opportunities for Barnsley’s young people

Local employers are set to boost the aspirations of 600 pupils from across Barnsley at a special careers event to outline the wealth of opportunities available to students when they leave school.

Organised by Business in the Community (BITC) on behalf of Barnsley Council, the annual I Know I Can industry day on February 4 at the Barnsley Metrodome aims to repeat the success of previous years by enhancing the knowledge and understanding of 14 to 16 year olds and helping them to better meet employers’ requirements.

The event is open to all local secondary school pupils and will enable local businesses to explain the different career and progression paths within their organisations - and what types of skills and qualifications young people need to gain employment.

Three hundred parents and carers will also be given an insight into the job prospects available from employers, including Barclays, South Yorkshire Police, East Coast Rail and Holiday Inn Barnsley at a twilight session at the Metrodome which runs from 3.30 to 7pm.

Liz Needleman, area director of BITC England East, said: “This is an excellent initiative, as many school leavers are unaware of the varied options local employers can provide them.

“The session will equip young people with key knowledge to help them make vital decisions about their future, as well as giving parents and carers valuable advice.”

Cllr Tim Cheetham, Barnsley Council’s Cabinet spokesperson for People (Achieving Potential), said the IKIC Industry Day was a great way for young people to broaden their awareness of the types of industries available in Barnsley, as well as in the Sheffield and Leeds City Regions.

“The IKIC Industry Day can help young people with their decisions about their future, and I recommend they come with an open mind as there might be some industries they haven’t heard of that could be perfect for them!” he said.

“The event is also for parents and carers in the borough who, by attending, can find out how they can best support their child’s move into employment – whether this is employment with training straight from school, for example through an apprenticeship, or employment opportunities in the future after further study or university.”
