The New Jobs Market - Rise in professional hashtaggers.
Last quarter saw a surge in freelancers consulting on social media platforms from Pinterest to Instagram according to PeoplePerHour. The freelance marketplace has recently collated emerging job trends likely to continue into 2015 and beyond and uncovered unusual niche skills such as freelancers specialising in developing hashtags for social media campaigns.
Freelance workplace websites are witnessing a new boom in jobs spawned by the rapid evolution of the internet and growing influence of social media the ‘new’ jobs market is set to keep growing rapidly inline with the internet influences. Skills that have seen exponential growth in Q4 of 2014 include Instagram consultants up more than 400% last year. Specialist freelancers are working on the image sharing platform to grow followers and engagement both for brands and, more surprisingly, individuals.
PeoplePerHour has also seen a 215% increase in people hiring social media managers to come up with witty Facebook statuses and tweets for their personal accounts, a 354 per cent increase in Pinterest consultants and a 504% rise in Vine consultants.
Two years ago, Vine, the short-form video sharing service officially launched after being acquired by Twitter in 2012. Its popularity grew within months of the official launch and today the app is used by millions of people and off the back of the App’s popularity, the Vine consultant was born.
Interestingly there has also been a 357% rise in entrepreneurs hiring freelancers to name their businesses, branding experts are ‘hyperspecialising’ in the specific area of naming businesses, platforms and apps, as it becomes harder to stand out from the crowd.
Some of these new jobs are relatively high paying, with people charging up to £36 an hour for their services, the equivalent of £278 a day.
Xenios Thrasyvoulou, founder of PeoplePerHour, which has 350,000 registered freelancers, said: “2015 will be the year of the hyperspecialist. Freelancers are really drilling down and finding niche skills in the field that they are experts in. They then hire themselves out to multiple businesses, which far from a negative means they are always bringing in fresh ideas and best practice to other businesses
The influence of the internet is not better illustrated than by the impact it has had on the landscape of the jobs market. Pinterest consultants, Google analytic consultants, personal social media managers – these are all jobs we’re seeing huge growth in.“ What’s particularly impressive is how fast specialists ‘pop-up’ the moment a new internet-technology is launched.“
The internet revolution hasn’t just changed the way we work, it has also spawned a new and vibrant jobs market, that could have a massive influence on the career paths of future generations, and ultimately change the career landscape forever.
