Top natural nutritionist leads us into Spring

Energy foods are those foods many of us take for granted as a lot of them will already be under our noses, within arms reach and locally sourced. So Karina Clappison says, what are you waiting for?!

Firstly the “energy” in food is the most important point here:

1. Foods high in water are crucial for our wellbeing as water is essential for hydration. Fruits and vegetables are essential as these consist of 70% water . You notice this when juicing them.

2. Foods which are seasonal match the energy of the season, which may go some way to explaining why strawberries in winter don’t taste anywhere as nice as in May time and are unlikely to have the same nutritional values.

3. Locally sourced foods aren’t just for the gastro chefs among you! Foods that are as local as possible, and won’t have travelled around the globe before landing on your plate, are the ones to buy! The nutrients from well travelled foods will have massively deteriorated and are less likely to have been sprayed or gassed in the aircraft to maintain freshness – also they are often harvested unripe so the nutrients will be under nourishing.

4. Karina can’t emphasize enough the importance of eating “closest to what nature intended us to eat.” These are foods such as uncooked fruit and vegetables (raw salads) because essential vitamins are destroyed when cooked, which strips the food of its life force, nutrition and energy.

5. For a power boost, eat leafy greens as they have a good range of nutrients such as iron, protein minerals and vitamins.

6. Eat a variety of different foods - this is key to obtaining essential nutrients.

7. It’s so much better to eat lighter foods in the evening. Foods such as steamed vegetables with prawns and ginger or a fresh avocado salad. Digestive activity is at its peak during lunch and are less likely to aggravate what goes on in the tummy and digestive tract.

8. Parsley contains energy promoting iron and vitamins - never underestimate this simple leaf.

9. Try to incorporate fresh herbs into your foods towards the end of cooking time to preserve flavour and vitality properties.

10. And lastly, hemp seeds are a great source of good fats, essential to energy – and are a good source of protein for vegetarians If you would like to talk to Karina, visit her website at www.eatyourwaybacktohealth.co.uk and she will arrange a discussion in the strictest of confidence.
