How to Choose a Glass Shower Screen

Whether it is for your wet room, bath or steam room, glass shower screens are essential for keeping both the water flowing where it should be and for keeping your home interior looking good. Glass shower screens come in several different types and designs, meaning that you are sure to find one that fits your tastes as well as your requirements.

If you are just beginning a bathroom remodel, however, it is important to bear in mind that choosing the right shower screen can make a huge difference to your renovation project. Considering this, taking time to learn the advantages and disadvantages of different types of glass shower screens will go a long way in selecting the right option.

The first choice – and the most traditional option – is the fully framed shower screen. These types of glass shower screens are known for being very robust, and therefore can be a good choice for families who expect a lot of bumps and scrapes to their bathroom furniture and fittings.

These items are inherently tougher as the frame that runs all the way around the glass pane addsa lot of strength to the structure. Fully framed glass shower screens are also one of the most affordable options for the bathroom when compared with frameless and semi-framelessdesigns. This may make them more fitting for anyone on a tight budget.

There are downsides to fully framed shower screens, however, and one of them is the extra cleaning that has to be done. These types of glass shower screens are prone to a build up of soapy residue and mould in and around the frame. They are also considered to be less aesthetically pleasing as their frameless counterparts, although many top designers do have many appealing framed options.

Semi-frameless glass shower screens are a step away from full framed screens and yet not fully frameless, giving them benefits of the two. Frames are smaller and more inconspicuous than the fully framed glass shower screens, therefore making them a more stylish choice for a contemporary bathroom.

These types of shower screens do not have a frame wrapped all the way around the perimeter of the glass panel, instead with parts of the frame positioned in key areas such as the top and bottom of the screen. This also makes them easier for cleaning.

Semi-frameless glass shower screens are also often made from toughened safety glass, which makes them able to hold up to the demands of a busy bathroom. On the other hand, they are more expensive than fully framed shower screens, although are considerably cheaper than completely frameless alternatives.

The frameless glass shower screen is the final option for anyone investing in a bathroom remodel. These have no framing or rubber seals, meaning easy cleaning with just a wipe down with a cloth and some detergent sufficient to remove any grimy build up. It is also the most popular choice for interior designers creating a stunning, sleek bathroom look.

The frameless nature of these glass shower screens means that bathrooms can seem more light and open, creating an illusion of space in a small room. Their minimalism is also perfect for both contemporary and traditional bathrooms, where an attractive bathroom suite can take centre stage without being blocked by a large and intrusive frame.

Toughened-glass framelessglass shower screens are the most expensive option, however, so deciding to invest in one should be a carefully thought-out choice. You may, for example, find an equally stunning semi-frameless or fully framed design that fits your bathroom perfectly.

These are just some of the pros and cons of the different types of glass shower screens, and all of them should be given some considerable thought before purchasing. Take into account how durable and easy to clean each item is, not forgetting that the aesthetics of the ideal piece should make a great complement to your bathroom design.
