Farnley Market Wins at World Bread Awards

Huddersfield-based artisan bakery and café, Farnley Market, cleaned up at a prestigious award ceremony held in London. The Bakehouse at Farnley scooped a Gold Award & Category Winner for its Flatbread at the Tiptree’s World Bread Awards, along with seven further Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards.

Held annually, Tiptree’s World Bread Awards is open to professional bakeries, as well as keen amateurs, and attracts hundreds of entries from a diverse range of bakers throughout the UK.

Following an intense night of baking at The Bakehouse in Farnley Tyas, the bakery delivered eleven entries to the judges in the heart of London with just 15 minutes to spare before the midday deadline.

Despite the bakery and coffee shop being open for just over one year, The Bakehouse managed to win awards in eight out of the eleven categories, including:

  • Flatbread: Farnley Focaccia - Gold & Category Winner
  • Great British White: Butt’s Bloomer - Gold & Category Runner Up
  • Speciality: Chocolate Orange Sourdough - Silver & Category Runner Up
  • Ciabatta: Farnley’s Golden Ciabatta - Gold
  • Sourdough: Roydhouse Blonde - Silver
  • Wholegrain: Seeded Dartmouth - Bronze
  • Read Bread Campaign: Earl Toft Light Rye - Bronze
  • Fruit: Woodsome Plum Fruit Teacake - Bronze

Stephen Harrison, Head Baker and Business Owner, said: “The competition at the World Bread Awards is fierce so when we first entered, we really didn’t think we stood a chance of winning. The team here at The Bakehouse pulled together and we all felt very proud when we saw the finished results, after a long night of baking. We were over the moon to find out that we had been shortlisted for an award and still can’t quite believe we took home eight awards on the night!”

The Farnley Focaccia was the stand-out entry with judges praising the delicious flavour combination and selecting The Bakehouse as the Gold and Category Winner for Flatbread. Overall, the judges were impressed with the appearance and flavours of all eleven entries and the bakery scored highly across the board.

Stephen was accompanied to the ceremony with his baking assistant, Jake Partridge, who helped develop the recipe for the delicious Chocolate Orange Sourdough Bread, which scooped the Silver Award and Category Runner Up for Speciality Bread.
