Penny Marshall: Infrastructure and the autumn statement
Penny Marshall, Director the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) in the North East, said: “Capital investment in infrastructure projects, along with increased devolution, more innovation and more apprenticeships put civil engineering on a firm footing for the next five years. The Infrastructure Commission will ensure that new infrastructure is based on unbiased analysis the country’s needs. The announcement of £200 million funding for Transport for the North and £45 million for flood defences in the North East are particularly welcome in our region.
“We hope to see the same level of commitment from Government in maintaining our existing infrastructure and await more detail on how the cuts to operational budgets will affect the upkeep of flood defences and local roads. We must maintain a balance between capital and maintenance budgets if we are to deliver infrastructure that gives the right level of service and connectivity, operates effectively for as long as possible, and helps to support a prosperous North East economy.
