Behind the Business with Sparkle Communications

Bdaily goes behind the business with Nicola Little and Jennifer Robson, Directors of Newcastle-based, digital comms agency Sparkle Communications.

What does your organisation do?

We do digital. Our ultimate aim is to get every business in the north east of England to do digital. What we’ve found through our work with businesses is that there is a huge lack of confidence and our goal is to break through this barrier and see businesses of all sizes in the north east do digital well. Whether it’s training our clients or delivering it all for them, we generate the results that they need to develop and market their business successfully.

What key challenges has your company recently faced?

It would be easy to claim that time management, cash flow and all the other issues that affect running a small business are challenges. Of course they are.

However our challenges presented themselves through seismic personal issues. We both went through a number of life-changing events just months after setting up Sparkle Communications; and working through those to get the business established and substantially increasing our client base in the first two years of trading, has proven that any challenge can surmounted. Now we are both personally sorted, who knows how far the sparkle will spread!

What is your biggest achievement over the past 12 months?

Our biggest achievement has to be tripling our turnover in our second year of trading, and growing our client portfolio from just two to over 40.

What is your most important focus for the coming year, and what do you hope to achieve?

To continue our upward growth while keeping our values and principles close to our hearts. We want to work with businesses across all sectors in the north east to help them overcome their barriers and use digital media as best they can.

What excites you most about your industry and business?

The only constant is change! The industry, therefore our business as well, is fast-paced, innovative, and rule-changing and breaking. This is very exciting for us. Our genuine love for all things digital and an intense awareness and drive to stay abreast of industry trends, knowledge and tactics means that we live and breathe digital communications and love nothing better than helping others do it too.

What do you wish you’d known when starting out?

Truly understanding the worth and value of our own time and coming to the realisation that it’s not free! And bringing in experts, whether this be accountants or virtual assistants, to make sure we use our own time in the most efficient (and profitable) way possible.

Oh, and turn your technology off sometimes!

What will be the “next big thing“ in your industry, and how do you plan to handle it?

Our industry is ever-changing. Predicting what’s coming next is nigh-on impossible; wearable technology, new communication platforms, the list goes on. Our challenge to learn as much as possible means that we have to invest heavily in our own professional development and know not just how to use the next big thing, but use it with purpose.

Sparkle’s next event will be in Newcastle on February 4th.
