How women can succeed in male dominated industries
With International Women’s Day this week, Judy Verses, President of Global Enterprise and Education at Rosetta Stone, has tips on how women can succeed in today’s global marketplace. “There are more opportunities for women in the workplace today than ever before. Staying ahead of the game is key to success and preparing for the role you’ll play in achieving business goals is critical,” said Verses.
Below are some of her top tips on how women can succeed in today’s global business environment:
• Success is all about people. You need to create a positive culture of positive people and an environment that respects people, challenges them and empowers them to be successful.
• When you have to balance work and family, you have to learn to lean on your spouse/partner and your boss for support. It also is important to me to foster an environment that helps people manage that difficult balance. To do that, I work hard to try to set a personal example, which also helps me to stay in check.
• In my opinion, the biggest opportunity for women today is to take advantage of all that is available to them and have the confidence to be at the table and have their voice heard.
• Develop a mentorship. My mentors have had a significant impact on my professional path and I have been lucky to have had multiple mentors throughout my career. So much of what I’ve learned about leadership has come from watching my mentors in action, as well as receiving their invaluable coaching. Find someone who can help lead you to become a better leader.
• In order for women to succeed in the global business world, it’s essential to be able to communicate effectively and language learning is crucial to communication. From my own experiences, I’ve found that studying a new language builds cultural awareness, fosters a productive and collaborative environment, empowers workers and gives them more confidence to talk to partners and customers. It definitely gives employees a competitive edge in a global job market!
