Innovators aim to revolutionise in-house wi-fi

TWO Tyneside innovators have created a product that could revolutionise the supply of in-house wi-fi for businesses.

Dean Dixon and Mike Tennant are the brains behind Horizon, a device which allows businesses to tailor the wi-fi service they provide for customers while gaining a clearer understanding of their client base.

And not only will the system work just as well for small businesses as it will for big chains, it can also be rolled out regionally, nationally and internationally.

“We’re so excited about Horizon because like most good ideas, it’s also a simple one,” said Dean.

“Myself and Mike just looked at ways to improve how businesses offer customers wi-fi in terms of their advertising and their data collection.

“And Horizon will give businesses so much more information about their users, as well as allowing them to advertise and target customers in a smarter way..

“We’ve also allowed them to install security to ensure there are no inappropriate downloads on their premises - which is particularly useful if children are using the service - and is important in order to protect the businesses themselves..

“But there are other benefits to the new system, as well as it being easy and inexpensive to install and run.

“With Horizon you can customise your landing page so that you can update your customer on your latest offers and services when they log on - you could change the look of your landing page every day if you wanted to and even offer partner companies the chance to advertise on your wi-fi.

“Customers who come in and use wi-fi in your business can also log-in through Facebook, twitter or email, and businesses will be able to understand who their most regular customers are and what services they need the most.

“In the past, many businesses have just offered their customers in-house wi-fi because it was seen as the thing to do.

“But Horizon takes it to the next level in terms of allowing them to better service their customers without intruding on their privacy.”

Dean and Mike are marketing Horizon under new company Nexus, which they created with business partners and comms specialists Paul Sykes and Callum McDougall, based at the Newcastle Business Centre at Holystone, North Tyneside.

And the new saucer-shaped Horizon pads were officially launched at the recentNorth East Expo at Kingston Park Stadium.

Dean said: “It was a big day for us, introducing Horizon to the general public and the business community for the first time.

“But we’ve already trialled it at O’Briens restaurant in Team Valley and Evolution Hair and Beauty in Jesmond with excellent results already, so we have every confidence in the product.

“It’s just a case of letting as many people as possible know about it.”
