Celebrating Commercial Manager’s career for National Apprenticeship Week

Barratt Developments Yorkshire West, which includes both the Barratt and David Wilson Homes brands, is celebrating National Apprenticeship Week with the 34 members of its staff that began their careers with the company as apprentices, and is taking the opportunity to shine a spotlight on Commercial Manager, Justin Tranmere.

Justin is celebrating 17 years with Barratt this year, having started as an apprentice with the division in August 2000, climbing the career ladder within the company to a trainee and assistant quantity surveyor, before progressing to quantity surveyor and senior quantity surveyor levels. Building a wealth of business and industry knowledge over 15 years, Justin progressed to his Commercial Manager role two years ago and is now responsible for managing members of the commercial team, allowing them to meet deadlines in terms of payments, valuations and procurement – all of which are crucial to the department. Additionally, the role requires Justin to maintain strong relationships with local suppliers and sub-contractors – an area of vital importance to Barratt, as the company has invested more than £50 million in the local economy through sub-contractors over the past financial year.

Working across Barratt’s portfolio of developments within the Yorkshire West region, Justin’s expertise in the commercial sector, built up throughout his time at Barratt, assists in further growing Barratt’s commercial offering.

Speaking about the value of apprenticeships, Justin commented:

“The opporutinities my apprenticeship with Barratt afforded me were fantastic and the training I received afterwards really gave me a great understanding of the work that a housebuilder does, and how many different professions come together to deliver what we do. For anybody wanting to get into the construction industry I can’t recommend an apprenticeship enough – it has led me to a brilliant career with Barratt.”

The launch of Barratt’s 2017 apprenticeship scheme, which coincides with National Apprenticeship Week, strengthens Barratt’s reputation for excellent staff progression, with a number of departments in the company boasting senior team members that have risen from entry level positions. Within the commercial department, Justin and another member of staff have progressed up the ranks from entry level positions, while a further apprentice is set to be appointed later this year. There are also two apprentices in the department currently in their first and second years of initial training.

Barratt Developments’ Apprenticeship Programme has been recognised by industry bodies as the best of its kind in recent years including the CITB Apprenticeship Awards, the Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers, and National Apprenticeship Service’s BT Macro Employer of the Year Award.

National Apprenticeship Week, which starts on 6th March 2017, was set up by the Government’s National Apprenticeship Service and is designed to celebrate apprenticeships and the positive impact they have on individuals, businesses and the wider economy.
