Learning at Work gets creative with tech

This week is Learning at Work Week, an annual awareness campaign organised by the Campaign for Learning which aims to highlight the benefits associated with enterprise learning and development for employees. With the potential to act as a catalyst for change, this campaign provides organisations with an opportunity to ‘rebrand’ or refresh workplace learning and reinforce their commitment to staff development.

“This year’s theme is “Curious & Creative”, making it the perfect opportunity to highlight how new innovative technology is being used to enhance the learner experience within the workplace,” says Elliot Gowans, VP EMEA at global learning technology leader D2L comments. “Traditionally, learning and working have been treated as separate tasks but thanks to advancements in technology the two are no longer mutually exclusive.”

“The experience can now be very much learner driven, with employees able to satisfy their curiosity and desire for learning whenever and wherever they choose. The scope for creative learning methods has also radically expanded thanks to the rise of new Learning Management Systems platforms which add personalisation to the learning experience to help meet the needs and requirements of each individual employee.

“Gone are the days of standardised educational videos and group exercises – learning now consists of social, mobile and video content that can be created, shared and accessed from any location. Game-based learning and simulations are also beginning to shape corporate learning; being used to deliver content in compelling methods to engage staff.

“Finally, there is the rise of learning analytics. Companies are now in a much better position to measure engagement and predict learner success, providing them with valuable insight into their workforce capabilities, which can create a substantial competitive advantage,” concludes Gowans.
