Bardsley Construction secures £15.5m contract to build 172-room Ancoats hotel

Family-owned building firm Bardsley Construction has expanded its presence in the hotels market after securing a multi-million pound contract with leisure operator Axcel Hospitality.

The £15.5m project will see Tameside-based Bardsley deliver a nine-story AC Hotel by Marriott in Ancoats, north of Manchester city centre.

The venue will be located on a former surface car park bounded by Mason Street and Cable Street, comprising 172 rooms along with a gym, café, restaurant, bar and conference facilities.

The scheme was designed by architecture firm Simpson Haugh & Partners.

Other companies involved in the development include project manager and quantity surveyor Axiom Project Services, mechanical and electrical specialist and fire engineer Cundall, structural engineer Quattro and pre-cast manufacturer F P McCann.

Bardsley Construction’s procurement director, Ged Rooney, said: “It’s some years since Bardsley was involved in the construction of a hotel on this scale, so we see this prestigious contract with Axcel and AC Hotels as an expansion into a new market for us, and a natural extension to our extensive residential sector experience.

“Demand for new hotels is buoyant with the requirement for quality and affordable leisure accommodation rising in line with the world getting smaller thanks to ever improving transport links such as the ongoing expansion of routes at Manchester Airport.”

AC Hotels, part of Marriott International, has over 100 design-led hotels across Europe and the US.

The brand made its UK debut last year with openings in Salford Quays and Birmingham.

AC Hotel by Marriott is forecast to open in Ancoats in early 2019.
