77% of teachers don’t have enough time for edtech

Research revealed that 77% of teachers say they do not have enough time to access information on education technology. The research was carried out by Driving Technology, the edtech company behind the IDEAS Bus. The retrofitted bright yellow 40ft American school bus is currently bringing technology to schools across the UK free of charge. The study also found that secondary school teachers were more likely to feel time constraints and felt as though they were not up to date with current offerings.

A huge 79% of teachers said that they did not feel confident that they were up to date with the latest developments in education technology and another 46% said they felt that they did not make full use of existing edtech in their classroom.

One in two teachers surveyed said that they felt their schools were trailing behind when it came to the adoption and implementation of the latest technological innovations. 42% of teachers reported a lack of funding at a LEA level and more than half (53%) of teachers felt that there wasn’t enough training that focused solely on technology.

Interestingly, an overwhelming 82% of teachers believe that technology makes lessons more engaging. However, just 37% said they used technology on a daily basis in their lessons. Two thirds (66%) of respondents said they had classroom integration issues.

When teachers were asked about the technology they already utilise, 77% said they use educational videos available online and 68% use software and educational apps. More than half (57%) use the internet for research and just under half (48%) make use of educational games.

The survey results come as the IDEAS Bus, an educational vehicle, packed with the latest edtech solutions, continue their campaign of showcasing the latest technology to schools across the UK. The IDEAS Bus transports the minds of students and teachers to the land of mind-blowing opportunities, bringing technology to schools free of charge on a refitted American school bus.

Casey Farquharson, founder and CEO of Driving Technology comments: ‘The results of this survey have come as no surprise to me. The amount teachers have to deal with on a day to day basis is growing consistently and it is understandable there is a lack of time for extras such as tech. The trouble is that tech is part of our daily lives and children need to master tech beyond using their iPad and mobile phones to have relevant job skills. Finding time to incorporate this into the curriculum and the fabric of teaching is imperative and teachers need more support in doing this.’

‘This is why we started the IDEAS bus, to offer free advice and education to teachers, allowing students to interact with tech and providing experts in tech on site at schools. We bring tech to the doorstep of schools making the process seamless, meaning teachers don’t have to deal with many providers and suppliers of tech.’
