Westlakes Science Park to undergo ‘pioneering’ low-carbon transformation

Building company Forrest has been chosen as the development partner for the Westlakes Science Park Low Carbon Energy Masterplan.

The Bolton-based business was appointed by developer Britain’s Energy Coast (BEC) as it looks to improve the science park’s energy resilience and minimise its carbon footprint by introducing low carbon power generation and export capabilities.

In the coming months, Forrest will develop a bespoke route map for the two square mile site, which is located near Whitehaven in Cumbria.

The masterplan, based on smart-microgrids and energy technologies, will see the efficiencies of the existing properties taken into consideration alongside future on-site developments to ensure what BEC said will be a “fully integrated solution”.

The strategy could include elements such as solar panels, electric vehicles and district heating.

Forrest divisional director Darroch Baker said: “Being selected for this pioneering scheme demonstrates our commitment to working with innovative clients to drive their low carbon objectives.

“BEC has some really exciting ideas for future energy activity and we’ll be critical in supporting at strategic level to achieve these and recommend new opportunities which have not yet been considered.”

Joe Martin, BEC’s head of funding and energy, commented: “This is a really exciting first step for us – our ambition for Westlakes Science & Technology Park is to become self-sufficient with renewable energy.

“This will benefit our customers on the Park and provide resiliency against rising energy prices while reducing our carbon footprint.”

Joe added: “The park is at the centre of the Energy Coast and our aim is to ensure that it continues to support the growth and development of the UK’s low carbon energy sector.”
