The 50-acre site was once home to the Vulcan Works factory

Final phase of Vulcan Urban Village to create 200 homes on former locomotive factory site

The final phase of new homes at a scheme in Newton-le-Willows is about to get underway.

Developer St. Modwen will deliver 200 family properties on the 14-acre plot at its £100m Vulcan Urban Village development.

The 50-acre site, once home to the Vulcan Works where rail locomotives were built, will comprise 630 homes and a children’s play area.

St. Modwen has also developed an Aldi supermarket and facilities for the Vulcan bowling, rifle and football clubs, which were previously based at the nearby Old Vulcan Works sports ground.

The new centre houses a bowling green, indoor rifle range, sports pitch and multi-use games area.

St. Modwen land director Nick Whittingham said: “Starting on the final phase of new homes at Vulcan Urban Village is a significant milestone in the development.

“This is a fabulous example of how a former brownfield industrial site can be transformed into a new community.”

He continued: “The former Vulcan Works had nearly 170 years of industrial use and now the site has entered the next phase in its history by providing much needed housing and amenities for the local community.

“We have worked very closely with St Helen’s Metropolitan Council, Jones Homes and Persimmon Homes to ensure Vulcan Village meets the needs of the community.”
