Red House School pupils are fuelling up for national chemistry competition

Pupils at a leading independent school in Teesside have earned a place in the national final of the Royal Society of Chemistry’s ‘Top of the Bench’ competition.

The team of four pupils, aged 13 to 15, from Red House School, Norton, fought off tough competition at the regional heat and impressed judges by earning the maximum marks available for their practical round.

The regional heats tested the participants’ factual knowledge in a written task and quiz-style rounds, and pupils also took part in challenging practical and problem-solving skills where teamwork was an essential factor.

Head of Chemistry at Red House School, Lynzey Spencer-Crabb, said: “We’re passionate about helping our pupils to achieve their full potential and we believe that participation in events such as Top of the Bench supports not only their education, but also their personal development.

“Jessica, Charlotte, Pippa and Sophie performed exceptionally well in the regional competition and we were particularly proud of their fantastic achievement in the practical round; gaining such high marks is very hard to achieve.

“Pupils can only enter the competition once, so the team should feel a great sense of pride and achievement for making it to the finals. We have watched their confidence grow throughout the competition and we can’t wait to see them in the final stage.”

The winning team members are now brushing up on their skills in preparation for the national finals, which will take place at the University of Birmingham, in March 2018.
