Leading the Way With An Apprenticeship

A young father is making strides in his role thanks to the help of Northern Skills Group.

Mark Christie, who works as a Project Manager for the Rail Sector at Amey, completed a range of internal training programmes and was keen to receive further recognised training in a leadership and management role.

After consulting with the company’s dedicated apprenticeship team, Mark was recommended Northern Skills Group’s Level 5 Apprenticeship in Leadership and Management programme to help him learn new theory, strengthen his skills and to generally help with his onward development.

Mark started the apprenticeship in February 2018 and has found the course very insightful.

“It may be cliché but I really am enjoying the programme, I didn’t opt to go to university so it has been some time since I took part in any classroom learning and a while since I had completed a written assignment.

“I’m finding it really refreshing being able to take a step back from my day to day role and assess what I am doing. I’m learning about new theory and models and looking at processes in the workplace in a much more logical way.”

Mark has been on the apprenticeship programme for just over 9 months and is making a positive impression with his tutor, Jan Ingram. She said:

“Mark has been an enthusiastic, highly motivated learner, demonstrating his application through detailed assignment work and his effective contributions in the classroom, I have enjoyed watching Mark grow in confidence and knowledge, applying the theoretical models to his written and practical work.”

The Level 5 Leadership and Management Apprenticeship allows learners to stay in their current role and study at the same time, with the programme including a varied range of learning such as written assignments, presentations and professional discussions.

Mark is already applying his learnings to his current role and hopes the apprenticeship will help him with his long term goal to progress to an Account Director role.

“I would recommend apprenticeships to anyone who is currently in a management role and looking to perfect their skills, it’s a fantastic way to learn while working and can really support career development.

You have got to want to do it, a Leadership and Management programme such as this does need that focus and drive. The support I have had from my Tutor Jan and Assessor Angela has been second to none.
