Accountancy training adds up to success for former graduates

Leading SME accountancy firm, Haines Watts, is celebrating the promotions of two former graduate trainees into senior roles at the firm’s Leeds office.

Matthew Barton, who began his role with Haines Watts over a decade ago with a degree in Accounting and Finance from Leeds University moves from Manager to become Associate Partner, whilst colleague Donna Thomas, who has a degree in Accounting and Finance from Huddersfield University, steps into his previous role, moving from Assistant Manager.

Both former graduates have completed ACA qualifications with the firm and the promotions follow a successful management buyout (MBO) last year which saw James Sutton step up to a Managing Partner role.

Speaking about the promotions, James said: “I am delighted to see the hard work of both Matthew and Donna rewarded with these well-deserved promotions. Both have shown high levels of dedication and commitment to their roles, combined with a deep understanding of the industry and unrivalled professionalism towards our clients.

“As a business we are focused on encouraging talented individuals from all backgrounds to consider a role in accountancy and have put in place robust and proven developments tracks. These include our Manager’s Skills Programme which Donna has successfully completed and the Leadership Development Programme which Matthew is a part of, alongside completing his Chartered Tax Advisor (CTA) certification.”

The company has also welcomed two new faces in the form of George Murphy, a graduate trainee, and Ryan Wilkinson, an Accounts Senior, both of whom are keen to follow in the footsteps of Matthew and Donna.

The Leadership Development Programme (LDP) provides a challenging and aspirational approach to leadership development. The programme is purposely designed to help identify and develop an individuals’ skills and talent to support them to senior roles in the business.
