Critically acclaimed author presents at Hays Education event in Leicester

Kate Milner, critically acclaimed author of ‘It’s a No-Money Day’ and ‘My Name is Not Refugee’ recently presented at an event hosted by Hays Education and All Around Reading held at Babingdon Academy in Leicester.

Kate’s presentation explored how picture books are used to discuss social issues with children and how they help develop empathy and understanding among readers. Following this was a discussion about how social class is represented in children’s literature and a Q&A session where members of the audience had the opportunity to ask questions directly to Kate.

The event was hosted by recruiting experts, Hays Education, and held in conjunction with All Around Reading, literacy experts who promote reading for pleasure within schools. Hays Education and All Around Reading collaborate to offer free events and CPD opportunities to partner schools across the country. This is the third event Hays Education and All Around Reading have held in the Midlands this year.

Kate’s most recent book ‘It’s a No-Money Day’ is making headlines across the country for its compassionate exploration of life below the poverty line. Her debut picture book ‘My Name is Not Refugee’ won the V&A Illustration Award 2016 and the Klaus Flugge Prize 2018.

Michelle Storer, Business Director at Hays Education, said: “We had a fantastic evening in Leicester with award-winning author, Kate Milner, talking about her recent books It’s a No-Money Day and My Name is Not Refugee. It was a thought-provoking session with great insights from Kate, who kindly agreed to support our event in partnership with All Around Reading. Thank you to all involved and our partner school Babington Academy.”

Joy Court, Co-founder of All Around Reading, comments: “We are delighted to work with Hays on these free CPD sessions which are a fabulous opportunity for teachers to hear directly from the authors and to bring that inspiration back to their classes. Picture books are most definitely not just for the Early Years and developing pupils’ visual literacy and empathy skills is incredibly important today. Kate’s powerful books could not be more relevant and we are thrilled to be bringing her to the Midlands where the issues she tackles are confronting many of our schools.”
