Sushi Daily becomes first sushi brand in UK to switch to 100 per cent recycled and recyclable sushi trays and lids
New ‘blue’ sustainable packaging to be launched across the UK at Waitrose counters
Sushi Daily, which specialises in creating fresh handmade sushi at counters in major supermarkets, is set to unveil new sustainable packaging – the first sushi brand to do so in the UK.
Sushi has traditionally been sold in black plastic trays and, despite a growing public desire for environmentally friendly packaging, the industry has been slow to change.
Now, however, Sushi Daily has developed blue trays and clear lids which are made of 100 per cent recycled plastic and, importantly, are also 100 per cent recyclable.
The trays are manufactured in Surrey, UK, and the energy used in the manufacturing of the trays and lids is certified green energy. They also fit well with the ethos of the Partners Against Waste campaign launched by Waitrose - where the brand currently has more than 90 counters across the country.
The coloured tray is detectable by near infra-red light, which means equipment at recycling plants can spot that it is plastic and sort it for recycling.
The new packaging will be rolled out at Sushi Daily counters in over 90 Waitrose branches across the UK as the first step in a ‘Change for Good’ campaign before being extended to all Sushi Daily counters in Europe.
Tor Harris, Partner & Head of CSR Waitrose said: “We are delighted that Sushi Daily have embraced their commitments and moved their sushi trays and lids to fully recycled and recyclable packaging. It’s an important step forward and aligns with our plans within Waitrose & Partners to eliminate unnecessary single use packaging and ensure that all our packaging has more than one life.”
Celine Ricord, Global Corporate Responsibility Manager at KellyDeli, Sushi Daily’s parent company said: “We know that consumers across Europe care about the environment and sustainability, and as a company we wanted to demonstrate our true commitment towards a more sustainable future.
“In conjunction with waste management experts, we have decided to opt for fully recycled and recyclable plastic as opposed to other packaging that is more difficult to recycle (multi-layered cardboard or compostable).
“We are also trialling a ‘bring your own’ scheme allowing customers to take their favourite sushi home in their own containers. This has been well received so we are planning to extend the trial in 2020.
“We are supporting the launch of the new 100% recycled, 100% recyclable sushi trays by raising awareness on the recyclability of the packaging across our counters to encourage consumers to dispose of their sushi trays responsibly. We need their help to move from a linear to a circular packaging economy.”
Sushi Daily’s sustainability plan will be unveiled in the next few months.
The company prides itself on high quality and the freshness of its sushi, prepared in store every day by a team of sushi artisans.
All fish cutting, vegetable preparation and rice cooking takes place on site, creating a ‘kitchen experience’ for customers.
