Notes from the Editor: Reporting on Business News in 2023

In this special co-authored editorial piece, Bdaily’s correspondents tell us a bit about themselves, share their insights into the world of reporting on business news and break down some recent highlights. Read on to find out more…

Matthew Neville:

Hi, I’m Matthew, Senior Correspondent for Bdaily. Having joined the business in November of 2021, I’ve covered all manner of happenings from the ever-evolving world of business over the past year and a half.

These days, my role comprises a number of responsibilities, including, but not limited to, writing content for Bdaily Premium, overseeing editorial performance and pulling together our various special features, such as our recent Innovation Week.

As an avid video game enthusiast in my spare time, my favourite sectors to write about for Bdaily include eSports, artificial intelligence, virtual reality, the Metaverse and similarly techy subjects of that nature. I also can’t resist a good food-related story, but who can, really?

Mark Adair:

And I’m Mark Adair, Bdaily’s Belfast-born correspondent. Starting in early 2022, I quickly found an interest in covering social impact and environmental stories. With the rise of importance in ESG and B-corp accreditations there’s been no shortage of news for me to cover.

If businesses are keen to spread the word about their latest good deeds I’ll always be keen to hear them out!

About Bdaily Premium

Matthew:

I view Bdaily Premium as a space in which me and Mark can explore subjects in which we are interested in a more in-depth way that can encompass styles of writing we typically wouldn’t utilise.

In particular, I believe that Premium can be a space where we can express personal opinions and share anecdotes which lend further context and detail to the topics we choose to discuss, such as my piece regarding last year’s ‘turbulent’ aviation industry, where I briefly detailed my less-than-ideal experiences.

Mark:

Premium allows us a space to work on more bespoke content which tends to be more specialised. I like to use Premium as a means of producing content aimed at thought and skill sharing.

I’m always looking for my next Premium article to write, so it’s always great when PR companies allow room for a further interview with their clients alongside their press release.

What we look for

As Correspondents, our job is twofold: Every day, our editorial inbox receives upwards of 200 emails consisting of press releases, interview requests and a plethora of other messages.

The first part of our job is to sift through all of this and determine what we believe is the most well-rounded and informative selection of stories possible and see them through to publication.

The second part of the job comes in when a breaking news story is emerging which we feel is of relevance and interest to the Bdaily audience. Thus, we don our little detective hats and magnifying glasses to find contacts and information so that we can put together an article.

A recent example of this would be the sudden yet significant WWE and UFC merger, a story with substantial global appeal but which had snuck up on us without any prior warning. In a case like this we need to work quickly and reach out to the people we know will be able to provide insight.

To make this process as efficient as possible, we tend to look for a number of things that make releases stand out/ easier to work with, including:

Our recent favourites

Matthew: My favourite Premium articles I’ve put out recently include my two pieces about artificial intelligence, with this being a particularly hot topic as of late with the rise in popularity of Chat GPT and the general integration of AI into the world of business.

In terms of our standard editorial output, I enjoyed covering the creation of a new fine dining destination in County Durham, as well as the lead-up pieces which detailed a now-open Argentine steak restaurant in the heart of Newcastle. I did say I struggle to resist a good food-based story after all.

Mark: I have enjoyed following the plans surrounding the Ouseburn developments. They have been a source of contention in the local community, so following the goings on along the Ouseburn river has been incredibly interesting.

I also enjoyed my interview with People Planet Pint’s Newcastle Host, Annie the sustainable life coach. As environmental reform becomes more and more important, seeing the business community come together to network to create a greener future is inspiring.
