Major refurbishment for Ego as Wolverhampton salon becomes a global social media sensation

A luxury Wolverhampton hair salon is celebrating a big birthday in style after going viral with a social media video.

Ego, which is located on Tettenhall Road, is 18 years old and is proving an Instagram sensation with a ‘tongue-in-cheek’ clip of the different clients they look after every day amassed more than 8.5million views and 6500 shares in the last thirty days.

It has gained 7500 followers from all over the world and led to new clients for the business that is run by local entrepreneurs Layla Sedgemore and Caz Bee.

The duo has also pressed the button on the refurbishment of its salon, creating a contemporary, relaxing environment that is a fusion of Scandinavian and Japanese influences, with plenty of monochrome, bespoke black and gold ‘egger wood’ and a new freestanding selfie wall.

Completed in just two weeks by Purcell Branding, the project took the building back to its core and required extensive new plumbing, telephone systems and the creation of eleven hair styling stations.

“We are so pleased with the refurbishment and our clients are equally positive about the changes we’ve made,” explained Caz Bee, who started with Layla as an apprentice 13 years ago.

“At first, we wanted to move to a new building but there was nothing really on the market that suited our requirements. Instead, we chose to bring in Purcell Branding who worked with Layla and I to create a salon that still has the ‘Ego’ essence yet wouldn’t look out of place among high-end London salons.”

She went on to add: “It all started with a sketch and, from there, we’ve turned that visual into reality and we can’t wait to show it off to our existing and new clients.”

Ego Hair Salon offers all types of hair styling, colouring and balayage, using more than 175 years’ combined experience across its artistic directors and exciting product partnerships with Alan Howard and Aston and Fincher, who supply Matrix and Colour Wow/Moroccan Oil respectively.

It also offers Great Lengths and Beauty Works extensions, the latter proving extremely popular with the girls from Love Island.

David Purcell, owner of Purcell Branding, commented: “This was by far our quickest ever refit project, taking just two weeks from Ego closing its doors to reopening as one of the real jewels in Wolverhampton’s hairdressing crown.

“We love working with clients on fulfilling a vision and that’s exactly what we did with Layla and Caz. A lot of the refurb is unique, with bespoke furniture, hand-picked signage, and the use of different materials to create the right atmosphere that embodies the personalities of the people who work there.

“It even has a coverline vinyl free-standing selfie wall that allows its clients to celebrate their new haircuts with a personalised ‘selfie’.”

Layla, founder of Ego, concluded: “It has been an amazing 18-year journey and we’re having such an exciting twelve months, including taking some of the staff away as VIPs to the Eurovision song content in Liverpool as a thank you for all their hard work and effort.

“Then we had the social media video going viral and reaching people in Asia and Australia and now the launch of our new-look salon. I can’t think of a more perfect birthday present.”
