ByBox partners with Sustainable Tech 4 Good to bring environmental and social benefits

Leading technology and supply chain management specialist ByBox has partnered with sustainability experts Sustainable Tech 4 Good to reuse redundant IT equipment for social good.

ByBox is working with Sustainable Tech 4 Good so that its laptops, desktops and servers, can be refurbished to be used by people who lack digital skills.

To address the challenge of one in five people in the UK lacking the online skills needed for everyday life, Sustainable Tech 4 Good works with partners to reduce electronic waste and increase digital inclusion by securely erasing data to industry standards, before refurbishing and deploying equipment through charities and not for profit organisations for use by people in need.

Items beyond economical repair are broken down for spares, further reducing waste and making more devices available for those in need.

ByBox currently has 45,000 smart lockers across more than 1,500 sites throughout the UK that enable businesses and their field engineers to securely collect and return equipment and parts at places of maximum convenience near their points of service.

Operating in 31 countries, ByBox delivers 30 million items per year, with 99.7% of deliveries made on time to support vital infrastructure including hospitals, telecoms, utilities and data centres. With its head office in Slough, ByBox has distribution centres in Bristol, Coventry, Doncaster, Glasgow, Huntingdon, London, Milton Keynes, Solihull and Warrington.

ByBox Head of IT Warren Martin commented: “We are pleased to be partnering with Sustainable Tech 4 Good to help us put our surplus IT equipment to good use in a responsible way.

“We will reduce the amount of electronic waste going to landfill while at the same time benefitting people in need through charities and not for profit organisations, spreading digital inclusion.

“The work that Sustainable Tech 4 Good does very much aligns with our corporate social responsibility programme and ambitions to minimise our carbon footprint, so their services are a great fit for our business.”

Sustainable Tech 4 Good founder Sue Gowling said: "We are delighted to be working with ByBox, a company that shares our vision of making technology more accessible and sustainable.

“By partnering with us to reuse their redundant IT equipment, ByBox is not only helping us to support people in need, but also contributing to the circular economy and reducing e-waste, with 40 million tons of electronic waste every year being thrown away worldwide.

"We hope that this partnership will inspire other businesses to follow suit and join us in our mission to create positive social and environmental impact through technology."

The partnership with Sustainable Tech 4 Good forms part of ByBox’s wider strategy to reduce its environmental impact at the same time as helping business customers to lower their carbon footprint by reducing the distance their field engineers have to travel to pick up and return parts.

As part of its wider strategy, ByBox works in collaboration with waste management provider Go 4 Greener, and now recycles more than 98% of its waste. Last year the company ByBox won an award for environmental best practice at the Green Apple Awards and an award for recycling excellence at the National Recycling Awards.

ByBox has run internal awareness campaigns around energy, water and waste management across its hubs and introduced Green Waste teams to champion best practice.

ByBox Head of SHEQ & Facilities Nicky Clews said: “At ByBox we are on a positive carbon journey and have invested significantly in our energy and waste management processes to reduce our impact on the environment. We work closely with our customers, colleagues and suppliers to raise awareness and take action to minimise our impact.”
