Merit in good health with ‘groundbreaking’ project
An off-site construction firm is set to design and build a new healthcare base.
Merit has been appointed by the York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to develop a hybrid theatre and MRI facility at York Hospital.
The site is planned to open in November 2025.
Northumberland-based Merit says the two-storey facility will feature a “cutting-edge” hybrid theatre, MRI suite and supporting offices.
Tony Wells, chief executive at Merit, which recently bolstered its team after welcoming 18 apprentices to its Cramlington factory, said: “We are thrilled to have been appointed for this ground-breaking healthcare facility project.
“Our team is dedicated to delivering exceptional results that will enhance both patient care and staff experience.”
Liz Hill, associate chief operating officer for surgery at York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, added: “This is an exciting development, and we’re delighted to be working with Merit to help deliver excellent diagnostic and vascular care for patients.
“The new facilities will be a real asset to us, creating a modern, spacious and innovative MRI suite and vascular hybrid theatre.
“This will enable more patients to be seen and provide enhanced care.”
Construction components are already being produced at Merit’s Cramlington factory, allowing for simultaneous off-site and on-site works to streamline the construction process and reduce disruption.
The project reinforces Merit’s reputation for delivering healthcare facilities, following similar work for hospitals across the UK, including Berwick’s new hospital, Bedford Hospital’s new Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) unit and a community diagnostic hub at Woking Community Hospital.
