Microbritt to grow big with headquarters move

A microfabrication firm is expanding operations with a new base.

Microbritt is moving to a site in Cramlington, Northumberland.

Bosses say it will increase operational space tenfold to accommodate growing demand.

The move follows a £400,000 investment in 2024 from the North East Innovation Fund, managed by Northstar Ventures and Angel Groups, which, along with the new base, will enable the company to scale production, enhance research and development and grow its workforce.

Dr Carl Dale, chief executive and co-founder of Microbritt, which is a Newcastle University spin-out, said: “Our new facility in Cramlington marks a major milestone.

“Expanding our operational footprint tenfold allows us to significantly enhance our manufacturing capabilities, accommodate cutting-edge equipment and drive further innovation in precision microfabrication.” 

The firm also recently secured its sixth patent for machining brittle materials and showcased its innovations at MicroTAS 2024, the 28th International Conference on Miniaturised Systems for Chemistry and Life Sciences in Montréal, Canada.

Dr Dale added: “Brittle materials, like silicon used in the semiconductor industry, have previously been difficult to machine because of their fragility. 

“Microbritt’s new patented process makes this possible and brings established CNC machining technology into a new manufacturing domain.”
