The Business Bite: Ad Gefrin's Bēodern

Food and drink recommendations for everything from client entertaining and post-pay day blowouts, to budget eats and trendy spots

Ad Gefrin, in Wooler

Generous hospitality and unique tasting experiences in the heart of Northumberland

What makes it unique? The striking settingNorthumbrian hospitality and the whisky tasting experiences.

Blow the budget or budget eat?
Starters from £10 and mains from £15. The dinner and tasting experience is £60 and the tour, dinner and tasting is £75 per person.

Stand out dishes:
A cleverly presented tower of tempura asparagus spears.

Service:
Super welcoming and friendly, as you would expect from a venue that prides itself on a sense of belonging and “the ancient experience of hospitality”.

Private room? The Den - a room that offers private dining for up to 25, buffet for up to 50 and conferences for up to 60 people.

Ad Gefrin impresses from first sight - the large building holds an Anglo-Saxon museum, distillery and restaurant, all set in the heart of Wooler.

Step inside and the entrance takes the form of a grand timber hall, echoing the golden age of the kingdom of Northumbria.

Fun fact: Stand on the circle in the middle and you can hear your voice reverberate back to you.

The dining hall recreates the social setting of a great hall, with a grand fireplace centre stage.

It's lovely by day, but even more impressive by night. And that’s where Bēodern by night steps in.

The new evening menu celebrates the best of Northumberland with flair.

On our visit, starters were the highlight of the meal.

A tower of seasonal asparagus tempura served with tangy jam was one of those dishes that left other diners with order envy.

Additionally, the pea velouté with poached egg and smoked milk emulsion had depth of flavour that meant you had to finish every drop.

Mains are hearty. On our visit, the duck dish was the favourite, served with chantenay carrots and Cuddy Cave mash.

Local touches add to the sense of getting a true taste of Northumberland - Cuddy’s Cave mash, named after St Cuthbert’s Cave just up the road, and a great selection of Doddington Dairy ice cream, based in Wooler.

If you are entertaining clients or guests, then we would highly recommend rounding your meal off with dessert over a whisky tasting.

Join the Ad Gefrin whisky alchemist as they guide you through their blends and match them to your dessert.

Take part in a daytime tour and the tasting room is another wonder, with music by local musician Kathryn Tickell and an ever-changing digital landscape that moves through the seasons as you sip.
