Newcastle University refreshes student hub

A university has “massively uplifted” its student support facilities.

King’s Gate, at Newcastle University, has reopened after a major refurbishment aimed at creating a more flexible and welcoming space.

Since opening in 2009, King’s Gate has served as a central hub for student services.

The recent redesign, shaped by student feedback, enhances collaboration and event spaces on Levels 1 and 2 of the building.

The refreshed space aims to better support evolving student needs and expectations, while also providing a warmer environment for visitors.

Newcastle architecture firm GSSArchitecture partnered with fit-out contractor Overbury to deliver the upgrades, continuing a broader partnership with the university that includes refurbishments at the School of Dental Sciences and ongoing work on the Interdisciplinary Care and Education Hub.

Simon Rennison-Rae, partner at GSSArchitecture, added: “At GSSArchitecture, we are delighted to have the opportunity to further strengthen our long-standing collaboration with Newcastle University.

“It is a pleasure to help deliver the new student-centred spaces and workplace design alongside Overbury.

“GSS worked extensively on the detailed design and coordination for compliance ahead of delivery on site, together with ongoing engagement with the key University internal stakeholders.

“The project is a massive uplift to the quality of spaces for both staff and students alike, supporting the evolving needs of the university community.”

David Vaal, managing director for Overbury Northern, added: “Overbury are delighted to have been involved in the striking transformation of Levels 1 and 2 at Kings Gate.

“It is great to see the space supporting the student’s needs and giving them a platform to collaborate, develop, engage with and support each other.

“By opening up the space and providing a more welcoming and flexible layout, we believe that the new facility will help to foster and maintain an improved balance of wellbeing, while delivering a great experience for all users and visitors.”
