Getting to know… Samantha Overton

In the latest instalment of Bdaily's Getting to know feature, which looks at the person behind the business profile, Samantha Overton, managing director at Leeds-based Zebra Print Group, talks about following in her father’s footsteps, the joy of helping clients’ visions come to life and how she relaxes outside the office…

We know you as the managing director of Zebra Print Group, but who is the person behind the title? Tell us a little about what makes you tick...

I’m a people person through and through, and I’m passionate about building strong relationships, whether that’s with clients, our team or the wider community.

I love bringing ideas to life and finding smart, creative solutions, especially when others say it can’t be done.

I’m also a bit of a perfectionist, which probably comes in handy in print!

Did you always want to work in the printing world?

Not exactly!

My dad David worked in print for more than 50 years, having started as an apprentice print compositor when he left school.

He was definitely a massive influence on me when it came to being introduced to the sector.

I started working with dad in 2010, and once I got a taste of the fast-paced, ever-evolving print industry, I was hooked.

There’s something really satisfying about taking a concept and turning it into something tangible and impactful.

What’s the best bit about your job? And the worst?

The best part is seeing the pride on clients' faces when a job exceeds their expectations, especially those challenging projects where we’ve had to think outside the box.

I also love watching our team grow and succeed – it’s incredibly rewarding.

The worst? Probably that there aren’t enough hours in the day! I’m always full of ideas, and I’d love more time to bring them all to life.

What do you consider to be your greatest achievement?

Growing Zebra Print Group into the thriving, respected business it is today while staying true to our values.

We’ve built a brilliant team, developed long-standing client relationships and pushed boundaries creatively.

How do you relax outside of work?

I love spending time with my family – I have a niece who’s like my little sidekick.

I’m lucky enough to have a lodge on the east coast, so I head there with my husband and family as much as I can.

We also have a villa in Spain, where we all head to when we need a bit of sun, rest and relaxation.

We’re so lucky to have such beautiful countryside on our doorstep in Yorkshire, so I head out for long walks with friends all the time, which is usually topped off by enjoying some good pub grub.

I’m also a bit of a keen baker, and love nothing more than throwing on my apron and cooking up some treats.

What makes Yorkshire such a great place to live and work?

There’s a grit and warmth to Yorkshire that you just don’t find everywhere.

The business community is incredibly supportive and the talent here is outstanding.

Combine that with stunning scenery, rich history and a proper brew and you’ve got the perfect mix of inspiration and groundedness.

Tell us something about you we didn’t know...

I absolutely love hosting a party – any excuse to gather people together and I’m there!

Event organising and management is my happy place, and I can’t help but throw myself into every little detail.

I also adore putting together gorgeous hampers for charity raffles and auctions to help raise funds and awareness for amazing local causes.

Knowing that a fun night or a beautiful hamper can make a real difference just makes it all the more rewarding.
