Apprenticeship schemes fuel future careers
Young people across Teesside are set to gain new opportunities in the region’s fast-growing clean energy sector thanks to three major training programmes.
A total of 175 students will benefit from courses supported by Net Zero Teesside Power (NZT Power) and the Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP), developed in partnership with the Tees Valley Combined Authority, local colleges, training providers and contractors.
Officials say the investment, worth more than £1 million, is designed to close the skills gap and build a workforce for the industries of the future.
Ian Hunter, managing director of NZT Power, said: “This is about creating real opportunity for young people in Teesside.
“By opening doors to further education and technical training, we’re helping build a future-ready and skilled workforce that will power the UK’s net-zero transition – and ensuring that local people are at the heart of it.”
Five students will join the NZT Power and NEP Operational Scholarship Programme, progressing from Redcar & Cleveland College to Middlesbrough College Group for a multi-year apprenticeship combining classroom and on-the-job training.
Rich Denny, managing director at Northern Endurance Partnership, added: “These apprenticeship schemes represent the future of Teesside.
“At NEP, we’re not only building world-leading low-carbon infrastructure, but we’re also investing in the people who will operate and sustain it.
“These apprentices are an integral part of that vision.”
Meanwhile, construction partner Balfour Beatty has recruited 29 apprentices and two graduates into its dedicated apprentice scheme, offering training in fields such as civil works, mechanical, pipefitting and marketing communications.
The group, drawn from across Teesside, were welcomed with an introductory day at Teesworks Skills Academy in August.
Andy Lambden, project director at Balfour Beatty, added: “At Balfour Beatty, we believe in building more than infrastructure, we build futures.
“This apprenticeship event, welcoming the new 2025 cohort for our project is a testament to our unwavering commitment to skills development and empowering young people across Teesside.
“Through the NZT-NEP Power project, we’re not only delivering a transformative energy solution, but also investing in the next generation of talent who will help shape the future of our industry and our communities.”
Finally, the £1 million Tees Valley Net Zero Industry Scholarship will see 141 students embark on training in welding, instrumentation, pipefitting, electrical engineering and civil operations.
Backed by a consortium of regional colleges and training providers, participants will also receive financial support to help with living costs.
Alongside the three schemes, Technip Energies, EPC consortium lead for the NZT Power and NEP onshore project, and Balfour Beatty have delivered more than 100 hours of educational outreach to over 1000 local students, underlining a long-term commitment to skills development across the region.
Juan David Lopez, executive project director at Technip Energies, added: “Welcoming this cohort of apprentices to the Net Zero Teesside Power – Northern Endurance Partnership Project is about more than skills development – it’s about empowering local young people to be part of a pioneering low-carbon energy project that’s shaping the future of the UK industry.
“Empowerment is at the core of Technip Energies’ spirit.
“With this groundbreaking project on their doorstep, they’re gaining hands-on experience in energy transition while helping shape a more sustainable future for the region.”
