Subsea engineer expands with £3 million base

A subsea robotics engineer says it will remain “at the forefront of innovation” after officially opening a £3 million base.

SMD has cut the ribbon on an 1800sq metre hub on Tyneside’s Neptune Energy Park.

Bosses say the site, based in Newcastle’s Walker district, will cater for a growing order book and allow the business to “continue delivering pioneering subsea solutions to clients globally”.

They add it will bolster a blueprint to hit £150 million turnover by 2030. 

Founded more than 50 years ago and employing in excess of 300 staff, SMD is known for subsea apparatus such as ploughs, trenchers and remotely-operated vehicles that are used on telecoms, oil and gas and renewable energy projects.

Its new Neptune Park hub, known as SMD Tech Works, includes a test tank and development laboratories, and complements existing bases in Wallsend and Shanghai.

It was officially opened by North East mayor Kim McGuinness.

Mike Jones, SMD chair, said: “SMD Tech Works is a milestone investment for us and the region. 

“Over the years, we have brought 12 world-first technologies to market, and this new space will ensure we remain at the forefront of subsea innovation. 

“It also strengthens our connection to the North East community, helping us create valuable career opportunities for local people.”

Bruce Shepherd, chair at Shepherd Offshore, which operates Neptune Energy Park, said: “SMD’s decision to invest here is a strong endorsement of the River Tyne’s world-class reputation.

“Its presence will not only support job creation and innovation, but strengthen the North East’s position at the forefront of the offshore and subsea industries.”

Mayor McGuinness added: “The North East will be the home of the green energy revolution, creating thousands of highly skilled jobs for our communities.

“Investments like SMD’s show the potential within the green energy sector in the region.”
