Tees Valley firms get digital boost

A Tees Valley initiative is helping small visitor-economy businesses strengthen their online presence and reach more customers.

The new Digital Marketing Transformer will offer one-to-one support, helping firms improve visibility, attract more visitors and increase sales.

The programme includes grants of £500 to £1000 for digital upgrades, making marketing simpler, more effective and less time-consuming.

Open to businesses with up to five staff across accommodation, food and drink, attractions, activities, culture and events, the Transformer begins with a detailed digital audit to identify strengths and opportunities.

Each business will receive a tailored plan covering areas such as social media strategy, branding, Google visibility and content creation.

Practical training and mentoring will help owners build confidence and embed new skills, while capital grants can support improvements such as photography, booking systems, digital hardware or software.

Tees Valley mayor Ben Houchen said: “We need to back small businesses and give them as many tools as possible to succeed in a competitive market, where you now often need a presence online.

“Our high streets are powered by hardworking independents who deserve every chance to thrive – and we want to give them the backing to access the benefits of the hundreds of thousands of visitors we attract Teesside, Darlington and Hartlepool ever year.

“Not only will this get the name of our brilliant local businesses out there but will also show more of the world what our region has to offer.”

Councillor Pamela Hargreaves, leader of Hartlepool Borough Council and Tees Valley Combined Authority cabinet member for creative place, added: “This project will give our tourism businesses the confidence and support they need to stand out online and attract more visitors.

“We’re home to unique character and experiences and this Transformer will help our businesses show that to the wider world. It’s another step toward growing our economy and promoting some of the great stories they have to tell.”

Eligible businesses must be based in the Tees Valley and available for at least two days of support in January or February 2026.

Applications close on January 7, with funding provided through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
