Blueprint revealed for £15 million city retail hub
Plans have been unveiled for a £15 million city retail hub.
Developer PRZM Real Estate hopes to build an M&S Foodhall, Aldi supermarket and Starbucks drive-through coffee shop in Sunderland.
Bosses say the venture – earmarked for disused land on Silksworth Lane – could create more than 100 jobs.
If approved, they add the SMR Architects-designed endeavour would be built by GMI Construction Group.
Sunderland City Council’s planning committee is set to rule on the blueprint later this year.
Matthew Anderson, PRZM Real Estate development director, said: “We are pleased to bring forward these exciting proposals.
“The scheme represents a substantial investment and will deliver significant benefits for local people, both during construction and once the scheme opens.”
Councillor Kevin Johnston, Sunderland City Council’s cabinet member for housing, regeneration and business, added: “We know many residents will be delighted to hear M&S plans to open another store in Sunderland, building on the success of its Washington store, which was expanded last year.
“Complemented by an Aldi and a Starbucks, this new offer will enhance the retail provision in the local area and serve new communities that have taken shape in Sunderland South, where thousands of homes have been built in recent years.”
Planning and development consultancy Lichfields is overseeing public feedback on the scheme until January 12.
Ollie Clements, Lichfields planner and consultation lead, said: “This is an exciting opportunity to enhance food shopping choice in Sunderland.
“The consultation is a vital step in the process, and we encourage local residents to look at the plans and tell us what they think.”
